I am not a Marine Biologist - Ramil, Caretaker of SEAFDEC Igang Marine Station

Natuto lang ako dahil sa 'guts' at kailangang kumita (I am not a marine biologist. I'm only a high school graduate. In the 15 years that I have worked with the sea and fishes, I have learned from them. I even did not know how to speak English. I learned because of 'guts' and the need to earn)," Ramil, one of the caretakers of the SEAFDEC Igang Marine Station in Guimaras island, said.

Now 51 years old, Ramil shared how he keeps fit . "Araw-araw nagbabangka ako mula sa amin. Wala rin akong bisyo. Di ako umiinom at nagsisigarilyo, kaya wala akong malaking tiyan. Siyempre kasama na rin diyan ang sex (Everyday I rowm my boat from home. I have no vices. I don't drink and smoke. That's why I don't have a big belly. Of course, sex is also included)," Mang Ramil laughed.

The virgin islands around Guimaras are now mostly up for sale said Ramil. Many of the owners of the islands have no money to develop them thus they sell them. Usually, an island is priced at 3 to 4 million. But we don't sell the islands just to any one. If what they plan to do is destructive to the environment, we will not allow it)," Ramil ended.
